Twin-spot Plume - Stenoptilia bipunctidactyla

Description

Wingspan 17 to 25 mm. Similar to Brown Plume (Stenoptilia pterodactyla) but often smaller, and with more prominent spots to the forewing.

Habitat

Grassland and flower rich meadows, especially where Scabious species are present.

When to see it

Flies in two generations between late May and early October.

Life History

Larva feeds on flowers and seeds of Devil's-bit Scabious, Field Scabious and Small Scabious.

UK Status

Widespread in much of Britain, but can sometimes be rather local.  In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as common.

VC55 Status

Infrequently recorded and rather local in Leicestershire and Rutland.
