Moss Navel
Moss Navel - Arrhenia rickenii
A small fungus associated with mosses. The caps are convex, becoming deeply funnelled and with a wavy edge when mature. The caps are dark grey or greyish-brown, drying to a paler brown, and the stem is pale. The gills are deeply decurrent and widely spaced.
Other Arrhenia of similar shape. A rustica is very similar (ref. Kibby Vol.2), but needs to be examined microscopically to separate,

Saprophytic on mosses on alkaline soil.
September to November in Britain and Ireland.
